It is important that schools make a major push to help girls feel confident in all of the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and math). Considering, for instance, how the field of engineering is such a good fit for girls (in the emphases it places on collaborative work, on helping make the world a better place, and on thinking creatively, e.g.), I look forward to the day when confident young women raise the percentage of female engineers in our country from a meager 12% to well over 50%. Thank you, Sally, for taking the time to spread this important message. Confident female role models can made a significant difference in carrying that message forward with our young female student body.

There has been a lot of blather about this study flying around the internet. It's nice to see something sensible, grounded, and from an experienced educator of girls here. I couldn't agree more; confidence is the key.

Sally, you couldn't be more spot on. It is so important that all of us set good examples for our girls. The language we use and the image we present have a profound effect on girls. It so important as women to send girls the message that we are good at math and we love it (even if secretly we think we aren't)! Thank you for helping to spread the word that encouraging girls to believe in themselves is the first step to gaining confidence in anything.
